A Quest for American Food

So last night I was watching a pretty bad show on Food Network (that tour of diners with the spiky-platinum-haired dude) but it got me thinking about American food. I'm inspired to go on a quest for classic American recipes (at least for those that don't include lard) and revisit some of the favorites of my youth--one of which has been featured of late in said bad show but also in an issue of Saveur a few months back: American chop suey! In my house this particular dish was also known as "slumgullion." Sounds appetizing, don't you think? It's basically canned tomatoes, ground beef, and elbow macaroni. Not glamorous but total comfort food. Send me your favorite only-in-America dishes and I'll keep you posted on fun recipes I track down.

How about crab cakes? I went to an "American" restaurant tonight and ordered the "Maryland" crab cakes. They were decidedly un-American and I was most disappointed.

Where to start? Here's a list off the top of the noggin, but don't feel obliged to check them all out.

tuna casserole
funnel cake
corn dogs
strawberry rhubarb crisp
glazed donuts
cobb salad

Spinach lasagna

Clearly I have struck a chord here. A definite yes on crab cakes, I have been wanting to make them since I moved here, Seattle is crazy for crab.

Strawberry rhubarb crisp I love and am particularly fond of the crisp part. :) But cooky, your suggestions require a lot of frying! Chefty does not have a fry-o-lator. But I think I could improvise...

Who's jimmy junk? Lasagna of any kind is a sure win.
